Honduran 2010-11 Coffee Exports 700,416 Bags Through Jan 14

Honduran coffee exports for the 2010-2011 crop cycle totaled 700,416 bags of 60 kilograms each through Jan. 14, more than double the amount exported during the same period last year due to a late-starting harvest that season, the Honduran Coffee Institute, or Ihcafe, said Monday.

Honduras, which is the second-largest Central American producer of coffee, exported 265,262 bags of green coffee beans between Oct. 1 and Jan. 14 during the 2009-2010 cycle.

The country's growers are normally among the last in Central America to start picking coffee berries, but the harvest was unusually late last year due to weather conditions that affected the flowering of coffee plants.

Coffee officials said programs to improve crop management--for example, by using good fertilizers and regularly trimming plants--during the last cycle have helped to increase production in Honduras.

Exports are expected to reach about 3.53 million 60-kilogram bags of coffee during the 2010-2011 season, up 12% from 2009-2010.
