NAIROBI (Commodity Online) : In a bid to exorcise ‘ghost kilograms’, where recorders in Kenya used to make adjustments in manual coffee weighing on farmer requests, is slated to come to an end as a new digital weighing system is going to be put in place.
Earlier, recorders would be bribed by farmers to manipulate the system. Manual weighing underestimated the weight of the crop on grounds of a common understanding, warranting farmers to request adjustments; the absence of which would under-pay them.
“We do not recognise less than a kilo as this is assumed to compensate for the sack used to carry the beans.”, said Mr Paul Muema, a recorder to Coffee Things.
The new system would eliminate paper work and bring in transparency in addition to saving time.
Carried out by the Kenya Coffee Producers Association, the new system is to be implemented in six factories across the country.
