Burundi Aims To Double Coffee Output In 5 Years -Regulator

Burundi's state coffee regulator Arfic said Monday that it aims to double the country's production in five years by replacing old and less productive trees.

It will plant at least 7.5 million trees of high-yielding varieties to boost production, said Arfic general manager Evariste Ngayempore.

The replanting program will boost annual output to about 50,000 metric tons from about 25,000 tons now.

Burundi's 2010-11 output reached 24,000 tons, below a revised forecast of 25,000 tons due to low productivity, drought, pests and disease, Arfic said. The initial estimate was 31,000 tons.

The country's coffee year runs from April to March.

Burundi's coffee harvests are cyclical in nature, with bumper harvests always followed by low yields.

It mostly produces arabica and exports nearly all of it, mainly to the U.S. and European Union markets.
