Mexico's April Coffee Exports Up 2% On Year To 313,525 Bags

Mexico's coffee exports in April were up 2% from the same month last year at 313,525 bags of 60 kilograms each, the Mexican Association of Coffee Production, or Amecafe, said Thursday.

The month's figure brings the total for the first seven months of the 2010-2011 season to 1.37 million bags, down 15% from the same period last season.

April was the first month that Mexico's coffee exports saw a year-on-year increase. Coffee officials with Amecafe have said the country will export 2.2 million bags of coffee this season, down 15% from last year because of a disappointing harvest due to bad weather and old, low-yielding plants.

Mexico expects to produce 4 million bags this season, down 5% from production in 2009-2010. The country exports a majority of the coffee beans it produces. The coffee cycle runs from October through September of the following year.

Meanwhile, the value of coffee exports from Mexico has been continually increasing due to the beans' high international prices. Mexico's coffee exports were worth $101 million last month, up from $308 million in April 2010.

Total exports for the season through April were worth $422 million, up from $306 million October-April of last season.

Officials with Amecafe have also said a growing number of coffee farmers have been getting their product certified for quality, thus securing better profits.
