Indonesia’s robusta coffee beans exports from the main growing area in southern Sumatra nearly doubled in April compared to the same month a year ago, trade data showed on Thursday.
Exporters shipped 23,247.05 tonnes of Sumatran robusta coffee in April, a 90.75 percent surge from 12,187 tonnes in the same month last year. T
here was no details on the jump in April exports but collectors and farmers in Sumatra had been selling their bean stocks from last year’s harvest in the past months to benefit from rallying coffee prices.
London’s July robusta coffee lost $34 to close at $2,577 per tonne, after hitting a new contract peak of $2,624 during Wednesday’s session.
Fundamentally, the market has surged on speculative buying and concern about tight supplies of high-quality beans. Indonesia is the world’s second-largest producer of robusta coffee, used in instant coffee, after Vietnam.
