Tanzania’s Top Coffee Rises 5.5% After Supplies Fall

Tanzania’s benchmark coffee price climbed 5.5 percent at an auction on Jan. 20 after supplies declined, the Tanzania Coffee Board said.

The top grade of arabica sold for an average of $261.72 for a 50-kilogram (110-pound) bag, up from $248.02 a week earlier, the board said in an e-mailed statement today from Moshi, in northern Tanzania. Supplies of the grade fell 9.2 percent to 2,198 bags, the board said.

Overall prices for mild arabica coffee rose $2 a bag, in line with gains on global markets, while those for robusta increased by $18.89 a bag, it said.

Total Supplies at the 23rd auction of the 2010-11 season jumped 36 percent to 14,596 bags from a week earlier, the board said. At least 11,882 bags were of freshly supplied beans, while the rest were carryovers from the previous sale, it said.

Tanzania reaps its crop from April through August. Arabica accounts for 75 percent of the country’s output, while robusta accounts for the rest.

The following are details of the Jan. 20 auction in U.S. dollars for a 50-kilogram bag for the good grades:
