TOKYO (Commodity Online) : World’s third largest economy and major coffee consumer, Japan announced plans to buy more coffee outside its traditional African markets.
According to Japan External Trade Organization, the move was aimed at broadening cooperation with producers on the continent.
Japan will increase buying from Uganda, Rwanda, Malawi and Cameroon apart from traditional sources like Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania.
Brazil, Costa Rica and Jamaica are the country’s other main suppliers.
Japan consumes 84,000 metric tons of coffee annually, with per capita consumption at 1.7 kilograms.
